The seventh and final way the narcissist can spy on you is the smear campaign. Let me explain. A smear campaign accomplishes many things for the narcissist. They get to ruin your reputation, discredit you, and cause people to turn their backs on you. But the narcissist is also observing to see who actually runs to your aid. Therefore, the smear campaign highlights who your support network is, if any. And with that information, the narcissist can now target these people who would be able to keep them in the loop with the information they need concerning you.
To conclude, narcissists are prepared to use all that is available to them to secretly spy on others. Apart from social media and modern-day gadgets, they often involve third parties, such as mutual friends or family, in their games to gather information or keep tabs on you indirectly. The different tactics all seek to maintain control and power over the victim, often while the victim is unaware that they are being manipulated and monitored. That is why recognizing these behaviors can be the first step in protecting oneself from a narcissist’s influence.
